The York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Chapter #724) was chartered on January 19, 1984, to focus specifically on the needs of the York County community. This milestone was made possible by the vision of twelve charter members: Alfreda Dorm, Wanda Dorm, Brenda Elby, Carmen Frost, Toni Gibson Thompson, Julia Hines-Harris, Pamela Jordan, Faye Kirkland, Marcia Murray, Genora Orr, Deborah Ritter-Grant, and Sharon Ritter. Since its inception, the chapter has operated under the theme "Forward with Fortitude," remaining dedicated to the sorority's Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.
Over the past 40 years, the chapter has become a cornerstone of the York and Adams County communities. Its educational impact is vast, having awarded tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships and distributed over 20,000 books to promote local literacy. Through signature youth mentoring programs like Delta Academy, GEMS, and EMBODI, the chapter provides essential resources and guidance to the next generation, ensuring they are equipped for future success.
Beyond education, the chapter is a tireless advocate for social justice, economic development, and health equity. Their work includes hosting voter registration drives, lobbying for fair school funding, and supporting Black-owned businesses through initiatives like the Peppermint Ball. Their influence also extends globally across the African Diaspora, from supporting schools in Apam, Ghana, and a maternity hospital in Kenya, to providing disaster relief in Haiti. Whether promoting mental wellness locally or aiding international communities, the York Alumnae Chapter remains a force for positive, lasting change.
